Guskov wasn't supposed to be here. The Uzbek slugger stepped in on short notice after Khalil Rountree Jr. fell out, but don't mistake him for a placeholder. He's 18-3-1 with 15 knockouts and three submissions — a finish in all but one of his wins — and he hasn't lost in his last five outings, a run that most recently included a draw against former champion Jan Blachowicz.

Beat a top-three name on a few days' notice and Guskov doesn't just climb — he vaults into title conversation. Lose, and Ankalaev's path back to Pereira gets considerably longer and lonelier.

That's why the pre-fight chatter has framed this as a de facto title eliminator, even if nobody at the UFC has stamped it as such. Ankalaev needs a statement, not just a win. Guskov needs to prove the Blachowicz draw was a floor, not a ceiling.
