Justin Gaethje waited three shots at the undisputed lightweight belt to finally get it, and now that he has it, the loudest question isn't who he fights next — it's whether he fights at all. UFC play-by-play man Jon Anik doesn't think 'The Highlight' returns to the cage, and he's pointing to a familiar source of pressure to explain why.

Gaethje, now 28-5 with 21 knockouts, stopped Ilia Topuria in the fourth round of last month's main event at UFC Freedom 250, held on the White House grounds in Washington, DC. That win ended Topuria's perfect 17-0 run and handed the American the strap on his third attempt. It's the kind of career-capping moment that tends to make a 37-year-old start thinking about the exit.

Anik's Reasoning

Speaking on the Anik & Florian Podcast, Anik flatly said he doesn't expect Gaethje to fight again. His reasoning wasn't matchmaking or injuries — it was what he called a bit of 'maternal pressure' creeping into the champion's decision. The hint didn't come from nowhere: JD Vance mentioned on the Joe Rogan Experience that Gaethje's mother wants him to walk away.

If that story rings a bell, it should. Khabib Nurmagomedov retired in 2020 after promising his own mother he'd stop, and he kept that word immediately after submitting Gaethje at UFC 254. Now Gaethje's the one sitting on top of the division with a family member reportedly nudging him toward the same door.

The Contender in Waiting

For his part, Gaethje hasn't committed either way. He's already waved off rematches with both Topuria and Paddy Pimblett, instead naming Arman Tsarukyan as the man who's earned the next crack. The Armenian, ranked #2 at 23-3, is coming off a second-round arm-triangle finish of Dan Hooker and has been circling a title shot for well over a year.

The complication is timing. Gaethje floated a possible Tsarukyan booking for early 2027 but hasn't locked anything in, which leaves a champion, a top contender, and a former titleholder in Topuria — booked opposite TBA at UFC 321 for a lightweight belt — all in a holding pattern.

A Clean Way Out

Retiring as champion after upsetting the division's most dominant force would be a clean way out, and few fighters get to script a finish that neat. Whether Gaethje takes it or lines up one more with Tsarukyan is the only thread keeping the lightweight picture from resolving itself. Anik's already made his call.
